Abstract

This community service program provided community-based basic English and Mathematics learning for 25 children living at Yayasan Kasih Ibu Aceh Tengah, comprising elementary and junior high school students. The program responded to the need for regular, supportive, and enjoyable English and Mathematics exposure outside formal classroom routines. Activities were organised through a weekly lecturer-team rotation; each team consisted of three lecturers and returned to its original schedule in the following month. The author facilitated the first-week session each month. The learning design combined outdoor fun learning, simple communicative practice, Total Physical Response-type commands, vocabulary games, picture-word matching, group discussion, and short role-play. The materials included greetings, self-introductions, numbers, colours, everyday objects, and simple classroom or environmental expressions. Evaluation was conducted descriptively through field notes, participant responses, oral practice, and observations of engagement. The children showed high enthusiasm, participated actively in games, responded to basic English and Mathematics prompts, and were increasingly willing to repeat words and use simple expressions. The program demonstrates that a community-based, playful, and context-sensitive learning setting can create a more approachable entry point to basic English and Mathematics literacy for children in an orphanage environment. Continued implementation, a shared module, and periodic formative assessment are recommended to sustain learning progress.
