Abstract

Household food security in rural areas continues to face challenges, including high dependence on market supply and the suboptimal use of home yards as a family food source. This community service program aims to strengthen household food security by empowering members of the Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) group to independently cultivate vegetables in their home yards in Dukuh Mencek Village, Sukorambi Sub-district, Jember Regency. The program applied a participatory and applied approach consisting of seven stages: problem identification and preliminary survey, coordination with village officials, program design and module preparation, socialization, training and demonstration of cultivation techniques, mentoring, and evaluation and publication. The results show that 85% of participants understood planting, maintenance, and harvesting techniques; 82% of participants' yards were productively utilized; family vegetable consumption increased from 1–2 to 4–6 types per week; and vegetable spending decreased by approximately 20–30%. The program also successfully established a food-resilient PKK group with a participation rate of 75–85%. It is concluded that empowering the PKK through home-yard vegetable cultivation is an effective strategy to strengthen household food self-reliance and security.
