Abstract

Contact dermatitis is one of the most common occupational skin disorders experienced by farmers due to exposure to chemical substances during agricultural activities. Preliminary findings among farmers in Pulo Village, Ciruas District, revealed that several farmers experienced itching on their hands after directly handling urea fertilizer without wearing protective gloves, with contact durations exceeding one hour. Prolonged exposure to chemical substances may trigger skin irritation and inflammation, potentially leading to contact dermatitis. In addition, most farmers have limited knowledge regarding the risk factors, causes, and preventive measures associated with this condition, highlighting the need for educational interventions to improve awareness and promote safe work practices. This community service program aimed to enhance farmers' understanding of contact dermatitis prevention related to chemical fertilizer exposure through health education. The program employed an educational approach consisting of health counseling, interactive discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and information on the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) during agricultural work. The target participants were farmers in Pulo Village, Ciruas District. The results demonstrated that participants actively engaged in the activities, participated enthusiastically in discussions, and showed improved understanding of the causes, risk factors, symptoms, and prevention of contact dermatitis. Evaluation findings also indicated that participants were satisfied with both the educational materials and the implementation of the program, as they were relevant to their occupational needs and working conditions. This program is expected to encourage farmers to consistently use appropriate personal protective equipment, thereby reducing the risk of contact dermatitis caused by exposure to chemical fertilizers.
