Abstract

Household waste management and environmental health remain important challenges in rural communities, including Bayung Gede Village, Kintamani District, Bangli Regency. Improper waste management may contribute to environmental pollution, increase the risk of vector-borne and environment-related diseases, and reduce family quality of life. This community service program aimed to improve the understanding of assisted families regarding waste segregation and environmental health through a family mentoring approach. The program was conducted from October 2025 to January 2026 and involved fifth-semester COME (Community Oriented Medical Education) students from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universitas Warmadewa, as family mentors. Each assisted family was accompanied by two to three students. The program consisted of three main stages: preparation, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation. The preparation stage included the development of educational materials, preparation of supporting facilities, and perception alignment for family mentors through an online Zoom meeting. Educational activities were delivered through direct discussions at the homes of assisted families, covering environmental health, types of household waste, benefits of waste segregation, health impacts of improper waste management, and the importance of sorting waste from the household level. Evaluation was conducted using a post-test consisting of 10 multiple-choice questions. The results showed that all participants achieved post-test scores above 70, indicating that the program’s success indicator was achieved. Participants generally understood the basic concepts of household waste, organic waste, waste segregation, and the relationship between waste and environmental health. However, understanding of household hazardous waste and the long-term health impacts of open waste burning still requires reinforcement. To support program sustainability, simple waste bins were provided to assisted families. This program is expected to promote sustainable household waste segregation practices and contribute to a cleaner, healthier, safer, and more environmentally friendly family environment.
